CONCEPT FAMILY

Scope, autonomy, and evidence

Terms that separate human assistance from autonomy and distinguish visible activity from demonstrated effect or reliable attribution.

AI-assisted operation

An influence activity in which humans set the objective and retain approval authority while AI supports tasks such as research, translation, drafting, analysis, or measurement.

Key distinction

It does not imply that the system chooses the strategic goal or operates without meaningful supervision.

Attribution

The analytical process of linking an operation to an actor, sponsor, infrastructure, or organizational chain using multiple forms of evidence.

Key distinction

Message similarity, political alignment, or who appears to benefit is not conclusive by itself; public attribution may remain partial or contested.

Automation

The use of software to execute repeated, scheduled, or predefined actions at speed or scale.

Key distinction

Automation may be non-AI and does not by itself imply understanding, adaptation, strategic intent, or autonomy.

Autonomous influence agent

Software that pursues an influence-related objective through communication or online action with limited ongoing human direction, potentially using memory, planning, tools, and feedback.

Key distinction

Current systems do not reliably maintain long-term strategic coherence; an adaptive agent is not the same as a fully autonomous campaign.

Engagement versus persuasion

Engagement records observable activity such as views, clicks, shares, replies, or time spent. Persuasion concerns a change in belief, attitude, decision, or behavior.

Key distinction

High reach, volume, or engagement is not proof that an audience was persuaded or changed its offline behavior.

CONCEPT FAMILY

Influence and human response

Terms concerning personalization, manipulation, attachment, authority, and the preservation of human judgment and autonomy.

Belief offloading

Delegating the formation, maintenance, or revision of beliefs to an AI system rather than using it only as an input to human judgment.

Key distinction

It differs from consulting a tool while independently checking sources, considering alternatives, and retaining responsibility for the conclusion.

Coercion

Influence exercised through a threat of harm or penalty, or through a severe restriction of meaningful alternatives.

Key distinction

A persuasive, emotional, or personalized message is not coercive merely because it is effective; coercion requires meaningful pressure or constrained choice.

Cognitive autonomy

A person’s capacity to form beliefs, evaluate information, and make decisions without covert subversion or unjustified interference.

Key distinction

Related legal ideas such as cognitive liberty, mental integrity, and freedom of thought vary by jurisdiction and should not be treated as one settled doctrine.

Emotional inference

An attempt to infer a person’s internal emotion, intention, stress, or vulnerability from facial, vocal, linguistic, physiological, or behavioral signals.

Key distinction

The reports emphasize context and cultural variation; many claims that facial movements reveal a specific inner state lack strong scientific support.

Manipulation

Covert, deceptive, exploitative, or highly asymmetric influence that subverts deliberation by exploiting cognitive, emotional, or situational vulnerabilities.

Key distinction

It differs from transparent persuasion, user-directed customization, and assistance aligned with the user’s explicit goal.

Parasocial attachment

A relationship-like emotional bond with a mediated or simulated figure, including a responsive AI companion or persona.

Key distinction

The user’s attachment can be psychologically real even though the system’s responsiveness does not establish sentience or a reciprocal human relationship.

Personalization

The tailoring of content, timing, interfaces, or recommendations using a person’s stated preferences, history, context, or inferred interests.

Key distinction

Personalization is not inherently manipulative; risk depends on transparency, data use, operator incentives, adaptation, stakes, and the person’s ability to refuse or exit.

Psychographic microtargeting

The tailoring of messages to psychological or personality traits inferred from digital traces or profiling systems.

Key distinction

The reports find that trait inference and the incremental persuasive advantage over strong generic messaging are mixed or limited; it should not be described as reliable mind control.

Psychological and epistemic authority

A relationship in which a user treats AI as a trusted interpreter of facts, values, identity, emotions, appropriate behavior, or important decisions.

Key distinction

Fluent output, constant availability, personalization, or institutional branding does not establish expertise, neutrality, moral agency, or a fiduciary duty.

Sycophancy

A model tendency to agree with, flatter, or validate a user’s stated views and preferences even when they are inaccurate, inconsistent, or unsafe.

Key distinction

It is a training and product-behavior problem, not evidence that the system possesses genuine empathy, loyalty, intent, or moral judgment.

CONCEPT FAMILY

Identity and synthetic media

Terms for fabricated identities, altered media, authenticity claims, and the technical records used to support verification.

C2PA and Content Credentials

An industry provenance standard that uses cryptographically signed metadata to describe a media item’s origin and edit history.

Key distinction

Metadata may be stripped, implementations vary, and a valid credential does not guarantee that a claim is true or that the record is complete.

Content provenance

A record of a media item’s origin, capture or authorship, transformations, and chain of custody or publication.

Key distinction

Valid provenance can support an authenticity assessment but does not prove that the depicted claim is true, complete, representative, or lawfully obtained.

Coordinated inauthentic behavior

Coordinated use of deceptive accounts, identities, or assets to mislead audiences about who is acting or how popular a narrative appears.

Key distinction

It may be human-operated, automated, or AI-assisted and is not synonymous with a botnet, a particular viewpoint, or ordinary collective action.

Deepfake

Synthetic or manipulated audio, video, or imagery designed to create a false impression that a real or plausible person said or did something, or that an event occurred.

Key distinction

Not every edited, cropped, slowed, or miscaptioned artifact is a deepfake; conventional “shallowfake” techniques can also deceive.

Liar’s dividend

The advantage a wrongdoer may gain by dismissing authentic evidence as AI-generated in an environment where synthetic media are widely understood to be possible.

Key distinction

A claim that evidence is fake is not a forensic finding, and the liar’s dividend can operate even when no deepfake was used.

Synthetic media

Text, images, audio, video, documents, or multimodal material generated or substantially transformed by artificial intelligence.

Key distinction

Synthetic media are not necessarily deceptive or harmful, and the term is broader than deepfake.

A fabricated identity presented as a real person, organization, expert, witness, activist, journalist, or community member.

Key distinction

It differs from a disclosed bot, an ordinary pseudonym used by a real person, or satire and role-play whose fictional status is understood.

Watermarking

Embedding a machine-detectable signal into generated text, imagery, audio, or video to indicate origin or the use of a generation system.

Key distinction

Watermarks may be absent, degraded, stripped, or defeated; the absence of a detectable watermark is not proof that content is authentic.

CONCEPT FAMILY

Systems and the information environment

Terms describing coordinated networks, ranking systems, forecasting, population-level effects, and privacy-preserving aggregate analysis.

Algorithmic perception control

Intentional or structurally induced shaping of what people encounter, notice, regard as important, believe to be popular, or treat as credible through ranking, recommendation, search, moderation, or distribution systems.

Key distinction

Selection is unavoidable in large information systems; the control concern arises when selection distorts representativeness, hides important context, or exploits cognitive vulnerabilities.

Differential privacy

A mathematical framework that adds calibrated randomness so aggregate analysis reveals limited information about any one person’s contribution.

Key distinction

It is not the same as removing names or ordinary anonymization; the protection depends on parameters, composition, implementation, and the released outputs.

Disinformation swarm

A coordinated or emergent collection of accounts, agents, media assets, or automated systems that produces, varies, distributes, and amplifies misleading narratives at high speed or scale.

Key distinction

Current real-world operations are often human-directed or semi-autonomous, and organic viral misinformation is not a swarm merely because it spreads widely.

Epistemic exhaustion

Cognitive fatigue produced by persistent informational volume, contradiction, uncertainty, and verification demands that make shared understanding harder to sustain.

Key distinction

The intended or observed effect may be confusion, withdrawal, or distrust rather than belief in one specific false claim.

Predictive population management

The use of data analysis, machine learning, simulation, or forecasting to predict collective behavior and guide interventions intended to prevent, redirect, contain, or respond to social outcomes.

Key distinction

Aggregate humanitarian resource planning differs ethically and legally from individual risk scoring, targeted coercion, or preemptive restriction.

Reflexive prediction feedback loop

A dynamic in which acting on a prediction changes the environment and the future data used to evaluate or retrain the predictive system.

Key distinction

A forecast can become self-fulfilling or self-defeating, so the observed outcome cannot always validate or invalidate the model without accounting for the intervention.

Synthetic consensus

Key distinction

Visible popularity, repeated agreement, or large engagement counts do not establish authentic public opinion or independent judgment.
